Chemical Peels Q & A

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is an aesthetic dermatology procedure that employs acids of various strengths to remove old or dead skin cells, sebum, and debris from the top layer/s of your skin. Chemical peels come in various strengths ranging from mild to strong, correlating with the depth of the skin being treated (superficial, medium, deep).

Your dermatologist prescribes the strength and type of chemical peel you need based on your particular skin type and issues. You may need occasional treatment with a stronger chemical peel, or you could benefit from a scheduled package of treatments with lighter chemical peels.

How do chemical peels resolve skin issues?

Chemical peels improve the quality of your skin to make it healthier and more resistant to chronic problems, including acne. Your DERMAGNIFY expert may recommend chemical peels to improve:

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Sagging skin
  • Dull skin
  • Acne
  • Brown spots

You can also use some chemical peels to treat skin issues on your body.

How often should I get a chemical peel?

Chemical peels are scheduled based on the type of peel you have. For instance, a strong chemical peel is usually performed once every year or two. A strong chemical peel completely ablates (i.e., removes) the outer layer of your skin, revealing tender skin underneath. You may need up to two weeks to completely heal from a strong chemical peel.

A mild chemical peel is usually used for prevention or maintenance. Although the acid dissolves the upper layer of dead skin cells, oil, and dirt, it doesn’t remove the entire epidermis.

You can get a mild chemical peel every month to keep your skin glowing and healthy. Mild chemical peels are sometimes called “lunchtime peels” because you can get one on your lunch break and return to most of your normal activities afterward.

How do chemical peels improve my skin’s health?

All chemical peels help your skin stay healthy and encourage it to rebuild itself through a process called neocollagenesis. When your skin undergoes any kind of trauma — even as mild as a superficial chemical peel — it starts a healing process that includes rebuilding the skin with new collagen and elastin.

Over time, your skin becomes stronger and more resilient. Even your pores are healthier, which means they’re less susceptible to developing clogs of dead skin and sebum that could lead to acne.
